Cupping Therapy

Relieve Muscle Tension. Improve Mobility. Support Recovery.

Cupping therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses specialized suction cups to lift the skin and underlying soft tissues. This negative pressure helps decrease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote the body's natural healing process.

Whether you're dealing with chronic muscle tightness, recovering from an injury, or simply feeling stiff after long hours at work, cupping therapy can be an effective addition to your treatment plan.

Every treatment plan is personalized to your needs and goals, ensuring that cupping therapy is used safely and effectively as part of your comprehensive care.

Cupping therapy can help:

  • Relieve muscle tightness

  • Improve circulation

  • Increase flexibility and range of motion

  • Reduce pain and stiffness

  • Promote relaxation

  • Support injury recovery

  • Enhance athletic recovery

  • Improve movement and overall function

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Unlike traditional massage, which applies pressure downward into the muscles, cupping works by gently lifting the tissue. This decompression helps release tight muscles and fascia, allowing for improved blood flow and mobility.

At Provision, cupping is often combined with chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy,  or corrective exercises to provide a comprehensive approach to pain relief and recovery.

HOW DOES CUPPING WORK?

The suction created by the cups:

  • Increases blood flow to the affected area

  • Decreases muscle tension

  • Improves fascial mobility

  • Reduces stiffness

  • Encourages lymphatic drainage

  • Supports tissue healing

  • Promotes relaxation

Many patients notice improved flexibility and reduced muscle tightness immediately after treatment.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Your provider will first evaluate the affected area and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Depending on your condition, cups may be:

Static Cupping

The cups remain in one position for several minutes to target muscle tension and improve circulation.

Gliding Cupping

The skin is lightly lubricated, allowing the cups to glide across the muscles to release larger areas of restriction.

Dynamic Cupping

The cups remain in place while you gently move the treated area through a range of motion, helping improve mobility and tissue flexibility.

Most treatments last 10–20 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Does Cupping Hurt?

Most patients describe cupping as relaxing.

During treatment, you may feel:

  • Gentle pulling

  • Stretching of the skin and muscles

  • Mild pressure

  • Warmth in the treated area

The intensity of suction is adjusted to your comfort level throughout the treatment.

Why Do Cupping Marks Appear?

After treatment, circular marks may appear where the cups were placed. These marks are not bruises caused by tissue damage.

Instead, they are temporary discolorations that occur as blood and fluids are drawn toward the surface of the skin.

The marks:

  • Are generally painless or only mildly tender

  • Usually fade within 3–10 days

  • Vary in color depending on the amount of tissue restriction and circulation

Not everyone develops noticeable marks.

After Your Appointment

To maximize your results:

  • Stay well hydrated.

  • Perform any recommended stretching or mobility exercises.

  • Avoid strenuous activity involving the treated muscles for the rest of the day.

  • Continue light movement such as walking.

  • Monitor how your body responds and communicate any concerns at your next visit.

Is Cupping Safe?

Yes. Cupping therapy is generally considered safe when performed by a trained healthcare professional.

Possible temporary side effects include:

  • Circular skin discoloration

  • Mild soreness

  • Temporary skin sensitivity

  • Light fatigue

These effects typically resolve within several days.

WHO SHOULD AVOID CUPPING?

Cupping therapy may not be recommended for individuals with:

  • Open wounds or skin infections

  • Severe sunburn

  • Active blood clotting disorders

  • Certain bleeding conditions

  • Fragile or damaged skin over the treatment area

Your provider will review your health history to determine whether cupping is appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments will I need?

Some patients experience relief after a single session, while others benefit from a series of treatments depending on the severity and duration of their condition.

Can cupping be combined with chiropractic care?

Yes. Cupping therapy is often paired with chiropractic adjustments, dry needling, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, rehabilitation exercises, and other conservative treatments to optimize results.

Will the marks hurt?

Typically, no. While the skin may feel mildly tender for a day or two, the marks themselves are not usually painful and fade naturally.

Is cupping only for athletes?

Not at all. Cupping can benefit anyone experiencing muscle tension, stiffness, poor mobility, or discomfort related to work, exercise, or everyday activities.
